The Storytelling – No Plastic project  was implemented with funding from the Cyclades Preservation Fund – CPF and is linked to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular goals 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 12 (Responsible consumption and production), 14 (Life below water), and 15 (Life on land).

Plastics injure marine animals, which often get entangled in large pieces of plastic and swallow smaller pieces as food. This prevents them from digesting normal food and attracts toxic substances into their bodies.

Humans consume plastic through the food chain, but how this affects their health remains unknown.

Marine litter causes damage to sectors and communities that depend on the sea, as only 5% of the value of plastic packaging remains in the economy – the rest is discarded, demonstrating the need for a more holistic approach.

Old nets are made of synthetic plastic and are a cause of seabed contamination. Only 1.5% of damaged fishing gear is recycled, while 20% of fishing gear is lost due to accidents or deliberately discarded at sea in the EU.

  • straws
  • plastic bottles
  • plastic cutlery

We use them for just a few minutes, but they end up in the sea and on our plates. Every week, a person swallows an average of 5 grams of microplastics!

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

“The nets can be sent to Gravity Wave in Spain, where they are transformed into furniture.

Plastic bottles can be sent to Ecoalf, a fashion company, to be turned into clothes, shoes, and bags.

Other plastics can be converted into pellets for the production of new products, such as skateboards.”
