GISA Commitment – Protecting Posidonia Seagrass Beds and Meadows
    26 June 2026
Cyclades Unified has joined the Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance. https://seagrassalliance.gr/symmachoi_new/ We are pleased to announce that Cyclades Unified has joined the network of partners of the Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance (GISA),https://seagrassalliance.gr/, a nationwide initiative for the protection of Posidonia and Greece’s seagrass meadows. Cyclades Unified is a civil society organization that responds to the need for change by building capacity and raising environmental awareness in the Cyclades islands, focusing on communities that are taking their first steps toward adopting Zero Waste practices. Our participation in GISA is a natural continuation of this journey. Posidonia seagrass beds form the foundation of Greece’s marine environment, supporting an economy that depends on fishing and tourism—while Posidonia sequesters carbon dioxide at rates that even exceed those of terrestrial forests. On the islands where we operate, these underwater areas are a critical part of the natural and cultural landscape. GISA aims to change this situation through extensive public outreach, partnerships with schools, training for educators and marine users, as well as initiatives with professionals in the fishing and tourism sectors. This approach aligns perfectly with the way Cyclades Unified chooses to work: close to communities, with respect for local culture, and with an emphasis on intergenerational learning. We are proud to join our voices with GISA’s allies and look forward to contributing to the protection of these underwater meadows—for nature, for our communities, and for future generations.
